Can ChatGPT Make Coloring Pages? What Works, What Doesn't, and a Dedicated Alternative

2026/09/30

ChatGPT can turn a text prompt or an uploaded photo into a black-and-white coloring page. Some results need fixing before they print well: you may get gray shading or thin or broken outlines, which you can usually fix with a more specific prompt, and OpenAI documents no batch mode or one-click print-ready PDF export. For a single page for your kid, ChatGPT is usually enough. For a stack of pages, a classroom set, or an Amazon KDP book, a dedicated coloring page tool adds features ChatGPT does not document, such as batch generation, PDF download, and a book builder.

This guide covers what ChatGPT does well, possible issues and prompt fixes to try, and how ChatGPT compares with a purpose-built generator such as MyColoring.ai. All ChatGPT facts below come from OpenAI's own pages (Last verified: October 2, 2026).

What ChatGPT does well

ChatGPT's image feature is a general-purpose image model, and coloring pages are one of the things it can draw. A few facts worth knowing:

  • It is available on every plan. OpenAI's help center says "ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers", on web, iOS, and Android. The current model is ChatGPT Images 2.5.
  • It accepts photos. You can "upload an existing image and describe the changes you want," which is how you turn a family photo or a pet picture into an outline.
  • You can pick the page shape. ChatGPT can generate images "in any aspect ratio," using the aspect ratio picker or by writing the ratio in your prompt. Ask for portrait (3:4) if you plan to print on letter or A4 paper.
  • OpenAI even teaches it. The OpenAI Academy has a short coloring page tutorial that recommends "thick outlines, no shading, and plenty of open space," and suggests asking for original ideas "rather than famous characters or copies of someone else's artwork."

If you want one page of a dinosaur riding a skateboard for a rainy afternoon, open ChatGPT, describe it, and you will probably have something printable within a few minutes.

Where ChatGPT coloring pages go wrong

The problems show up when you print. A picture that looks fine on screen can turn into gray smudges and hairline strokes on paper. The table below lists issues you may run into, why they can happen, and a prompt fix to try if they do.

ProblemWhy it happensPrompt fix to copy
Gray shading or gray backgroundThe model may add shadows and depth unless you rule them out, which can print as muddy gray fills"Black outlines on a pure white background. No shading, no gray tones, no fills, no gradients."
Lines too thin to color insideFine detail looks good on screen but prints as hairlines"Use thick, bold, uniform outlines, like a children's coloring book."
Broken or open outlinesSketchy styles can leave gaps; open outlines make edges hard to follow, and in digital fill tools color may spill into the next area"Every shape must be a closed outline. Clean vector-style line art, no sketch strokes."
Too much detail for young kidsThe model fills empty space with texture"Simple scene, large shapes, lots of open white space, suitable for ages 4–6."
Wrong page shapeThe default shape may not match your paperPick 3:4 in the aspect ratio picker, or add "portrait 3:4 page" to the prompt.
Character changes between pagesOpenAI's API guide says the model "may occasionally struggle to maintain visual consistency for recurring characters"Describe the character in the same exact words every time, and upload the previous page as a reference.
Elements in the wrong place, or text offOpenAI notes difficulty "placing elements precisely in structured or layout-sensitive compositions"Keep layouts simple; add names or titles later in a design tool, or use a dedicated name page generator.
An edit changes more than you askedOpenAI's help center says highlighted edits "are not always precise, and edits may extend beyond the area you selected"Regenerate the whole page with a corrected prompt instead of stacking many small edits.

A prompt template that usually works

Start from this and change only the subject:

Create a printable coloring page of [subject].
Black outlines on a pure white background.
Thick, bold, closed outlines. No shading, no gray, no fills, no gradients.
Simple background with plenty of open space to color.
Portrait 3:4 page. Original design, no existing characters or logos.

If the first result still has gray areas, reply with "Remove all shading and gray areas and keep only clean black outlines," rather than starting over.

Turning a photo into a coloring page in ChatGPT

Upload the photo and write something like: "Turn this photo into a coloring page: clean black outlines only, no shading, simplify the background." If the first result is not clean enough, repeat the request with more specific instructions. If gray tones appear in faces or fur, ask for "outlines only, no shading on skin or fur." If you convert photos often, our photo to coloring page tool is built for exactly that step, and the step-by-step photo guide shows what kinds of photos work best.

Can ChatGPT make a whole coloring book?

It can help, but we found no verified one-click flow in ChatGPT that produces a finished KDP book. There is no documented "make me a 30-page book" button, and OpenAI's help center describes Copy, Save, and Share for images, not a PDF or book export. You still need to plan the pages, check consistency, and verify the final layout. A typical ChatGPT coloring book workflow looks like this:

  1. Plan the list of pages and write one prompt per page.
  2. Generate each page. OpenAI says image generation "may take a few minutes, depending on the complexity of your request."
  3. Check each page for gray, broken lines, and character drift, and redo the ones that fail.
  4. Download every image and place them into a document at your trim size.
  5. Export a PDF yourself and check that it meets your printer's or Amazon KDP's rules.

That is fine for a small family project. For a book you plan to sell, the time adds up. Our KDP coloring book guide walks through trim size, bleed, 300 DPI, and the AI disclosure that Amazon asks for.

Can you sell coloring pages you made with ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI, yes. The Terms of Use (effective January 1, 2026) say that, as between you and OpenAI, you "own the Output." OpenAI's content creation help page adds that this includes "the right to reprint, sell, and merchandise – regardless of whether output was generated through a free or paid plan."

Three caveats from the same terms matter for sellers:

  • Output may not be unique. OpenAI warns that "other users may receive similar output," so do not expect exclusive designs.
  • Do not pass it off as hand-drawn. The terms prohibit representing "that Output was human-generated when it was not."
  • Characters and brands are still off limits. Owning the output does not give you rights to someone else's character, logo, or artwork.

OpenAI also says it uses "C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking to help identify images made with our tools." If you sell on Amazon KDP, you must disclose AI-generated images anyway.

ChatGPT vs. a dedicated coloring page tool

Here is how ChatGPT compares with MyColoring.ai on the points that matter for printing. We make MyColoring.ai, so read this column with that in mind. For a wider comparison with ColorBliss, Canva, iColoring, Colorify AI, and Gemini, see our AI coloring page generator comparison.

When ChatGPT is enough, and when to switch

Stay with ChatGPT if you need one or two pages, you already pay for ChatGPT, and you are happy to re-prompt until the lines look right. It is a flexible tool, and the OpenAI Academy tips above get you most of the way.

Use a dedicated tool if you:

  • need many pages at once, such as a themed classroom set; MyColoring.ai batch coloring pages takes up to 50 items in one batch;
  • want a full book with a cover and a consistent character; the MyColoring.ai AI coloring book builds 40 interior pages plus a color cover for 82 credits (reusable characters cost 2 credits each);
  • need a PDF you can print right away, or a larger 4K file for bigger prints;
  • regularly convert photos with the photo to coloring page tool, or start from a text prompt without writing long "no shading" instructions every time.

What MyColoring.ai does not do

To keep the comparison fair, here are our current limits:

  • There is no native iOS or Android app. The website works in mobile browsers.
  • SVG export is coming soon; today you get PNG and PDF.
  • Free use is for personal and classroom projects only, and free creations may appear in our public gallery. Private generation is available on paid plans.
  • Commercial rights do not cover third-party characters or brands, and a content filter blocks NSFW requests.
  • We do not print books or upload them to Amazon KDP for you.

You can start MyColoring.ai for free: current trial and sign-up offers are shown on the pricing page, and signed-in users can earn up to 18 credits per week from daily check-in.

Is ChatGPT free for coloring pages?

Yes, with limits. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers, including Free, but free accounts have stricter image limits than paid plans and OpenAI does not publish an exact number of images per day.

Can I sell coloring pages made with ChatGPT?

OpenAI's terms say you own the output and may reprint, sell, and merchandise it whether you made it on a free or paid plan. You are still responsible for not copying third-party characters or brands, and platforms such as Amazon KDP require you to disclose AI-generated images.

How do I stop gray shading in ChatGPT coloring pages?

Say it explicitly in the prompt: 'black outlines on a pure white background, no shading, no gray tones, no fills, no gradients.' If gray still appears, reply 'remove all shading and gray areas, keep only clean black outlines' and ask for thicker lines.

Can ChatGPT make a whole coloring book?

It can help, but there is no verified one-click flow that turns ChatGPT images into a finished Amazon KDP book. You still need to plan the pages, check that characters and line style stay consistent, and verify the final layout and PDF against your printer's or KDP's requirements.
