To publish an AI-made coloring book on Amazon KDP you need print-ready interior pages at your trim size, a full-wrap cover, commercial rights to the artwork, and an AI-content disclosure when you publish. None of these steps is hard, but each one has a specific rule, and missing one can get your files sent back for changes.
This guide walks through KDP's requirements, a seven-step workflow, the math for 300 DPI, and what a 40-page book costs to make and print. All KDP facts come from KDP's own help pages and are linked in place (Last verified: September 30, 2026). We make MyColoring.ai, so we use it in the examples and say clearly what it does not do.
KDP requirements for a coloring book
This guide covers paperbacks, the usual format for coloring books. These are the rules that matter most for a black-and-white coloring book sold on amazon.com.
| Requirement | What KDP asks for | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Common trim sizes | 8.5" x 11" (24–590 pages, black ink on white paper), 8" x 10" (24–828 pages), or 8.5" x 8.5" square (24–590 pages) | Trim size, bleed, and margins |
| Minimum page count | 24 pages; KDP rounds your page count up to an even number | Paperback submission guidelines |
| Bleed | 0.125" trimmed from the top, bottom, and outside edges; an 8.5" x 11" page with bleed is 8.625" x 11.25"; if one page bleeds, set up every page with bleed | Trim size, bleed, and margins |
| Margins | At least 0.25" on the outside edges without bleed, 0.375" with bleed; 0.375" inside (gutter) for 24–150 pages | Trim size, bleed, and margins |
| Interior file | PDF is required when pages bleed; single pages, not two-page spreads; flatten transparency; 650MB maximum | Paperback submission guidelines |
| Image resolution | At least 300 DPI; under 200 DPI counts as low resolution; 600 DPI maximum recommended | Image resolution |
| Blank pages | No more than 4 blank pages in a row at the beginning or middle, and no more than 10 in a row at the end | Blank pages |
| Cover | One PDF with back cover, spine, and front cover, with 0.125" bleed on all sides; or use Cover Creator, which accepts JPG, PNG, and GIF | Cover guidelines |
| AI disclosure | Required for AI-generated text, images, or translations, including cover and interior artwork | Content guidelines |
| ISBN | Coloring books are generally not "low-content," so a paperback needs an ISBN; KDP offers a free one | Low-content books, ISBNs |

Two more details worth knowing: 8.5" x 11" and 8" x 10" are "large trim sizes" with their own printing costs, and KDP limits the number of titles you can create at the same time to 2 per book format each week.
Step by step: from idea to published book
| Step | What to do | How |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick a theme and an audience | Decide who colors it. Young kids need bold lines and big shapes; adults often want detailed patterns. Choose a trim size now, because it sets your page shape and pixel needs. |
| 2 | Generate the pages | Use the AI coloring book maker for a themed set with a color cover, or the single page generator and batch coloring pages for extra pages. |
| 3 | Check every line | Zoom in on each page. Look for gray fills, open outlines, stray marks, and anything that resembles a known character or brand. Regenerate pages that fail. |
| 4 | Download | Download PNG or PDF files. Check the pixel size of each file against the 300 DPI math below. |
| 5 | Assemble the interior | In a layout tool, set your trim size (plus bleed if art reaches the edge). Add a title page and a copyright page. Print single-sided: put each design on a right-hand page and leave the back blank so marker bleed-through doesn't ruin a design on the other side (colorists can also slip a sheet of paper behind the page). |
| 6 | Build the full-wrap cover | Use your front cover art in KDP Cover Creator or a design tool, then add the spine and back cover. White-paper spine width is page count × 0.002252"; spine text only prints on books with more than 79 pages. |
| 7 | Upload, preview, disclose | Upload the interior PDF and cover, fix every warning in KDP's previewer, answer the AI-generated content question during setup, and choose a free KDP ISBN or your own. |
Why single-sided pages work with KDP's blank-page rule
KDP allows no more than 4 blank pages in a row in the middle of a book. A blank back after each design is only one blank page at a time, so a single-sided layout stays inside the rule. KDP also lists "excessive blank pages" as a common reason files fail review, so avoid extra runs of blanks at the start or end and check the previewer before you submit.
The 300 DPI math
KDP explains resolution with a simple example: an image of 1200 x 1800 pixels printed at 4" x 6" has 300 DPI. In other words:
DPI = pixels ÷ inches printed.
For a full 8.5" x 11" page with bleed (8.625" x 11.25"), 300 DPI means about 2,588 x 3,375 pixels. For art that sits inside the margins, you need fewer pixels, because the printed area is smaller. KDP also warns that changing the DPI number in an image editor "will not actually increase the quality of the image," so the pixels have to come from the source file.
How to apply this with MyColoring.ai:
- MyColoring.ai coloring book interior pages are generated at 2K and cannot be upscaled inside the book tool.
- Single pages from the page generators can be made at 1K, 2K, or 4K.
- For KDP, export pages at 2K or 4K. Keep the image's proportions when you place it, then divide its pixel width by the printed width and its pixel height by the printed height (in inches). If either result is below 300, print that page smaller inside wider margins, or make that page with the single page generator at 4K instead.
- Always review the finished interior in KDP's previewer before you publish.
Worked example: a 40-page book
Say you want a book of 40 designs at 8.5" x 11", printed single-sided in black ink on white paper.
Making the pages. A MyColoring.ai coloring book with 40 interior pages plus a color cover costs 82 credits (2 credits per page, and the cover counts as one page). Smaller books cost less:
| Interior pages | Pages printed single-sided | MyColoring.ai credits (including cover) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 6 | 8 |
| 5 | 10 | 12 |
| 10 | 20 | 22 |
| 20 | 40 | 42 |
| 40 | 80 | 82 |
Note that 3, 5, or 10 designs printed single-sided come to fewer than 24 pages, KDP's minimum, so for KDP use 20 or 40 interior pages or combine several sets. A MyColoring.ai one-time pack of 200 credits costs $13.99 and covers two 40-page books at 82 credits each.
Page count. 40 designs single-sided give 80 pages. Add a title page and a copyright page and you are still under 110 pages.
Printing cost. KDP calculates printing cost as a fixed cost plus page count times a per-page cost, and subtracts it from your royalty; there is no upfront fee. For a black-ink book of 24–110 pages on amazon.com, a large trim size such as 8.5" x 11" costs a flat 2.84 USD per book, with no per-page charge. Bleed settings don't change the cost. (Calculated from KDP's printing cost page, last verified September 30, 2026.)
Spine. At about 82 pages on white paper, the spine is roughly 0.18" wide, and since the book has more than 79 pages, KDP will print spine text.

Commercial rights and AI disclosure
Your right to sell the art. Check the license of the tool you use before you publish. With MyColoring.ai, every paid plan, including one-time credit packs, allows commercial use, including Amazon KDP and Etsy. Free use is for personal and classroom projects only. No plan gives you rights to third-party characters or brands, so keep your book original. Plans are listed on the pricing page. Other tools set different thresholds for commercial use; our comparison of AI coloring page generators lists them.
The AI disclosure. KDP's content guidelines say: "We require you to inform us of AI-generated content (text, images, or translations) when you publish a new book or make edits to and republish an existing book through KDP. AI-generated images include cover and interior images and artwork." During title setup, KDP asks whether your book contains AI-generated content. Two points from the same page:
- Art made with an AI tool counts as AI-generated "even if you applied substantial edits afterwards."
- If you created the content yourself and only used AI to edit or refine it, it is "AI-assisted," which you do not have to disclose.
KDP also makes you responsible for checking that AI content follows its guidelines, "including by complying with all applicable intellectual property rights."
ISBN. KDP lists coloring books under "Not Generally Low-Content," because they "generally do not feature repetitive content on each page." That means your paperback needs an ISBN. You can use a free ISBN from KDP; the imprint will then show as "Independently published."
What MyColoring.ai does and does not do
MyColoring.ai handles the artwork: interior pages, a front cover illustration, and PNG or PDF downloads without a watermark. You handle the rest:
- Not included: we do not print books, upload them to KDP, or build the full-wrap cover. The cover we generate is a front illustration; the spine and back cover are made in KDP Cover Creator or a design tool.
- Page limit: one AI coloring book has up to 40 interior pages plus the cover. For a longer book, combine sets or add pages from the single page or batch tools (up to 50 items per batch).
- Formats: PNG and PDF today; SVG is coming soon.
- Devices: there is no native app; the website works in desktop and mobile browsers.
